Description:
In the year 875, a warrior’s helmet was laid to rest in the earth of York, buried beneath the streets of a city that would become a crossroads of kingdoms. Nearly twelve centuries later, that helmet—the Coppergate helm—was uncovered, its face still bearing the likeness of a warrior who had once stood in the shield wall. This replica honors that legacy. Faithfully modeled after the iconic Coppergate find, this helmet is constructed from thick 16-gauge carbon steel with riveted plates joined by deeply engraved cross-shaped brass bands. The prominent nasal guard is intricately carved with traditional animal-style motifs, while the brass eyebrow ridges sweep upward and terminate in stylized beast heads, giving the helmet a commanding and protective presence. The articulated ear flaps and hinged cheek guards offer full facial protection and are lined with leather edges for comfort. The rear is fitted with a hanging curtain of steel chainmail (aventail) that guards the neck and shoulders. Inside, a leather suspension liner provides fit and stability, though it is currently loose and damaged from age—an honest condition for a piece with this much character.
