This is the weapon that broke cavalry charges, held shield walls, and decided the fate of clans on feudal battlefields. The yari demanded immense skill to wield effectively—its length and weight made it a weapon of precision, not brute force. The Rattan-Wrapped Yari by Paul Chen for CAS Hanwei is a faithful reproduction of the su-yari (straight-spear) design. Its blade is forged from T10 high-carbon steel, a material prized for its edge retention and durability. The blade features a straight, triangulated, double-edged geometry with a distinct, deep hi (blood groove) running down its center—a traditional feature that reduces weight without compromising structural integrity. Differential tempering results in a clear hamon (temper line) on each edge, a hallmark of quality Japanese-style blades. The tang extends deep into the shaft to absorb the shock of impact. The spear's upper section is wrapped in glossy, ribbed golden-orange rattan, providing a secure, tactile grip. Below this, ornate dark brown lacquered fittings with raised triangular brass medallions add a layer of visual richness. The lower shaft is finished in deep black lacquer, completing the traditional aesthetic. A smooth, polished brass collar ring marks the transition from steel to wood. This version features an 11-inch blade, making it a faster, more maneuverable weapon than the longer-bladed SH2152 model. It is provided with a black lacquered wooden sheath (saya), which shows some minor chips but remains fully functional. Blade shows minor tarnish and light surface rust — structurally sound and fully functional. Scabbard has minor chips in the lacquer finish. Rattan grip and brass fittings are intact and sturdy.
